Beautiful.ai review: features, limits and alternatives

Beautiful.ai made its name with slides that lay themselves out: you add a point, the layout rearranges. That is a real strength — and it comes with real limits once a deck has to live in PowerPoint or in a company template. Here is what the tool does well, where people get stuck, how to move a deck out of it, and which alternative fits which need.

8 min readUpdated

Beautiful.ai is a browser-based presentation tool built around one idea: the layout should follow the content, not the other way round. Instead of a blank slide and free-floating boxes, you pick a slide type — a list, a timeline, a comparison, a chart — and the tool keeps spacing, alignment and sizes in order while you type. Over the years an AI generator joined it that drafts a whole deck from a prompt.

This review describes the product as its public pages and help centre present it, and as it behaves for a typical business deck. Features and prices of any tool change; check Beautiful.ai’s own site before you decide. We make ExpertSlides, an AI presentation maker, so we say plainly where our tool differs — and where Beautiful.ai is the better choice.

What Beautiful.ai does well

Smart Slides: layouts that adapt

The core of the product is its library of smart slide templates. Add a fourth item to a three-item list and the items shrink and re-space; add a column to a comparison and the grid redistributes. You cannot easily make a slide messy, which is exactly why teams with many occasional presenters like it: the output looks consistent even when nobody on the team is a designer.

The AI generator

Beautiful.ai’s AI (it has been marketed as DesignerBot) turns a prompt into a first draft: a title, an outline, slides in smart layouts, sometimes with generated pictures. Like every generator it is best treated as a starting point — the structure is often sensible, the wording generic, and the facts are only as good as what you gave it.

Themes and team features

Themes set colours, fonts and logo placement for a whole deck, and the team plans add shared slide libraries, locked brand themes and shared folders. Presentations can be shared as links, and viewer analytics show who opened a shared deck — useful for sales teams that send decks rather than present them.

Where people hit limits

The same constraint that keeps slides tidy is the most common complaint. A few situations where it shows:

  • Free placement. When a slide needs something the template did not plan for — an arrow pointing at one bar, a logo in a specific corner, an annotation over a photo — you are working against the layout engine.
  • Company templates. Many organisations require their own PowerPoint template (.potx) with its masters. Beautiful.ai uses its own themes, so a deck made there does not start from your corporate file.
  • The PowerPoint round trip. Decks can be exported to PowerPoint, but a smart slide becomes ordinary PowerPoint content: the auto-layout does not travel with it, and how editable each object is depends on the slide type. Plan a check of the exported file before you promise a client an editable deck.
  • Offline and desktop. It is a web app. Presenting offline works through an export (PowerPoint or PDF), not through the tool itself.
  • Price for occasional use. It is a subscription. If you make three decks a year, compare the cost with the free tiers of the alternatives below.

Moving a deck from Beautiful.ai to PowerPoint or Google Slides

Whatever you decide, you will probably need a deck outside the tool at some point. The steps follow the export menu as Beautiful.ai’s help centre describes it; names can shift slightly between versions.

Export a Beautiful.ai deck and check itWeb (Windows and Mac)

  1. Open the export menu

Open the presentation and use the Share or export menu at the top of the editor. Choose the PowerPoint export (.pptx); PDF is listed beside it.

  2. Open the file in PowerPoint

Open the downloaded .pptx in PowerPoint on Windows or Mac. Go through it with the slide list on the left: fonts that are not installed on your computer are replaced, so check headings first.

  3. Test what must stay editable

Click into a text box and type, select a chart and choose Chart Design → Edit Data, move a shape. Whatever does not react is a picture or a group; note those slides.

  4. Fix the theme fonts

If the deck should use your company fonts, open the Design tab, click the arrow of the Variants group and choose Fonts → Customize Fonts (the same on a Mac), and set the heading and body fonts. Texts that use the theme fonts follow at once.

    Design → Variants → Fonts
  5. For Google Slides, import the .pptx

In Google Slides choose File → Import slides, upload the .pptx, tick Select all or pick slides, and decide whether to Keep original theme. Check the fonts again: Google Slides only has Google Fonts.

How to test any AI presentation tool in thirty minutes

Reviews, ours included, can only tell you so much. The fastest way to decide is to run the same real brief through two or three tools and compare what comes out. Use a deck you actually need this month, not a demo topic — generators are always good at “the history of coffee”.

  1. Give each tool the same brief. One paragraph on audience, purpose and the points that must appear, plus a document or a table of figures if you have one.
  2. Count the corrections. How many slides needed rewriting, how many facts were invented, how many layouts broke when you added a line? That number predicts your weekly effort better than any feature list.
  3. Move something by hand. Put a logo in a corner, an arrow at one bar of a chart, a photo across half a slide. A tool that fights you here will fight you every week.
  4. Apply your brand. Colours, fonts, logo. Check whether it holds on every slide or only on the title.
  5. Export and open the file elsewhere. PowerPoint on another computer, Google Slides, a PDF on a phone. Change a figure in a chart and a word in a heading.
  6. Share it. Send a link to a colleague and ask what they saw on their device.

Write the results in a small table — one row per test, one column per tool — and the decision usually makes itself. If the deck has to land in PowerPoint, weigh the export test twice.

Beautiful.ai alternatives, by what you need

There is no single best alternative; there is the one that fits the job that pushed you away. The table sorts them by that job. Our Gamma alternative page compares Gamma and ExpertSlides in detail, and the PowerPoint AI page covers the AI inside PowerPoint itself.

Designs for this kind of deck

Every design brings its own colours, fonts and layouts to the whole deck.

How ExpertSlides compares

ExpertSlides starts from the same promise — a designed deck from a sentence — but takes the opposite position on layout. The AI picks a layout from the library of the design you chose and writes the content to fit it, so a slide arrives as tidy as a smart slide. After that, every element is free: you drag, resize, group and rotate as in PowerPoint, and Magic Fix tidies the slide again when you have moved things around. Instructions in plain words do the rest — “turn this list into a timeline”, “add a bar chart of these figures”.

The other difference is where the deck goes. The PowerPoint export (Pro and Business) writes PowerPoint’s own objects: texts and shapes you type into, tables, charts with their data behind Edit Data, transitions and animations as PowerPoint’s own. Every plan exports PDF; on Free the PDF carries the ExpertSlides mark. You can also open your own .pptx on My Projects and keep working on it. Brand kits (Pro and Business) read your colours, fonts and logo from a brand guide or your website; teams with shared presentations and live editing are part of Business.

Where Beautiful.ai is the better choice: a team that wants guard rails more than freedom, that presents from the browser and values viewer analytics on shared links. Where ExpertSlides fits better: decks that end in PowerPoint, decks built from documents and data, and people who want to move an arrow without a fight. Questions, answered

Is Beautiful.ai worth it?

For teams that want consistent, tidy slides without design skills and present mostly from the browser, often yes. If decks must end up as editable PowerPoint files or in a company template, test the export with a real deck first.

Can you export Beautiful.ai to PowerPoint?

Yes, as a .pptx file and as PDF. Smart layouts become ordinary PowerPoint content, so check fonts, charts and which objects stay editable after the export.

Does Beautiful.ai have AI?

Yes. Its generator drafts a deck from a prompt in its smart slide layouts. Treat the draft as a starting point and check the wording and the facts.

What is a good Beautiful.ai alternative?

It depends on the need: ExpertSlides or PowerPoint with Copilot for editable PowerPoint, Gamma for scrollable card pages, Canva for many formats, Google Slides for free collaboration.

How is ExpertSlides different from Beautiful.ai?

ExpertSlides also generates designed decks from a prompt or documents, but every element can be placed freely afterwards, and the PowerPoint export writes native, editable objects including charts and animations.
