Convert to and from PowerPoint: images, Canva, Google Slides and Illustrator

Most “converters” are really an export button in the app you already have. This guide shows the built-in way for each conversion people search for — pictures to slides, PowerPoint to Canva and back, Google Slides, Keynote, Illustrator — and what survives the trip and what does not.

File conversion around presentations sounds technical, but nearly every case is covered by a menu in PowerPoint, Canva, Google Slides or Keynote. Online converters exist for all of them, and they come with two costs: you upload your file to a stranger’s server, and you get back something less editable than the app’s own export. Use them only for formats your apps cannot write.

Pictures to PowerPoint: one picture per slide

Holiday photos, product shots, scanned pages, screenshots of an old deck — to put each on its own slide, PowerPoint for Windows has a tool most people never find: the Photo Album.

Many pictures into slides with Photo AlbumWindows

  1. Open Photo Album

In a new or existing deck choose Insert → Photo Album → New Photo Album….

Insert → Photo Album → New Photo Album…
  2. Add the pictures

Click File/Disk…, select all the pictures (Ctrl+A in the folder) and click Insert. Reorder them with the arrows under the list.

Photo Album dialog with pictures listed
  3. Choose the layout

Under Picture layout choose Fit to slide for full-screen pictures, or 1, 2 or 4 pictures per slide, with or without a title. Frame shape adds rounded or framed corners.

  4. Create it

Click Create. PowerPoint makes a new presentation with one slide per picture (or per group). Apply a design afterwards with the Design tab.

Pictures into slides on a MacMac

  1. Insert them all at once

PowerPoint for Mac has no Photo Album. Choose Insert → Pictures → Picture from File…, select several pictures with Cmd-click and click Insert. They land stacked on one slide.

    Insert → Pictures → Picture from File…
  2. Spread them over slides

Cut a picture (Cmd+X), add a slide (Cmd+Shift+N), paste (Cmd+V). For many pictures it is faster to drag them from a Finder window onto each slide thumbnail in turn.

PowerPoint to Canva, and Canva to PowerPoint

Bring a PowerPoint into CanvaCanva

  1. Import the file

On Canva’s home page choose Create a design → Import file and pick the .pptx (dragging the file onto the home page works too). Canva converts it into a Canva design, one page per slide.

Canva: Create a design → Import file
  2. Check the fonts and effects

Canva replaces fonts it does not have and drops most animations and SmartArt (diagrams turn into grouped shapes or pictures). Go through every page before you share it.

Download a Canva design as PowerPointCanva

  1. Open the download

In the design choose Share → Download.

    Canva: Share → Download
  2. Pick PPTX

Set File type to PPTX and choose the pages. Click Download.

  3. Open it in PowerPoint and check

Text stays text, but effects Canva has and PowerPoint lacks — some frames, gradients on text, certain elements — arrive as pictures. Fonts that are Canva’s own fall back to another font unless you install them.

Google Slides and Keynote

Google Slides opens PowerPoint files directly. To insert some slides into an existing Google deck instead, use File → Import slides and pick them from the .pptx. The way back is File → Download → Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx).

Turn a PowerPoint into a Google Slides presentationGoogle Slides

  1. Upload it to Drive

In Google Drive choose New → File upload and pick the .pptx.

Google Drive: New → File upload
  2. Open it in Slides

Double-click the file. It opens in Google Slides in Office editing mode, marked with a .PPTX badge beside the name — you can edit it, and it stays a PowerPoint file.

  3. Save it as a Google file

For comments, sharing and add-ons to work fully, choose File → Save as Google Slides. Drive keeps the .pptx and adds a Google Slides copy. With Settings → Convert uploads switched on in Drive, this happens on every upload.

Google Slides: File → Save as Google Slides

Keynote on the Mac opens .pptx files with File → Open and saves a copy as PowerPoint with File → Export To → PowerPoint. Both directions keep text, pictures and most shapes; transitions and fonts are where differences show. Install the deck’s fonts on the receiving machine before you judge the result.

Illustrator artwork in PowerPoint, sharp at any size

Export from Illustrator, insert in PowerPointWindows and Mac

  1. Export as SVG

In Illustrator choose File → Export → Export As…, set the format to SVG and tick Use Artboards if each artboard is a graphic. SVG stays sharp at any size. For a photo-like artwork choose PNG with a transparent background instead.

Illustrator: File → Export → Export As… SVG
  2. Insert it

In PowerPoint choose Insert → Pictures → This Device (Windows) or Insert → Pictures → Picture from File (Mac) and pick the SVG.

  3. Make it editable, if needed

In PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, select the SVG and choose Graphics Format → Convert to Shape. Its parts become PowerPoint shapes you can recolour one by one.

And “PowerPoint to Flash”?

Converting decks to Flash was popular for putting presentations on websites. Flash Player reached its end of life at the end of 2020 and browsers no longer run it, so a Flash export would play nowhere. The current equivalents are a video (File → Export → Create a Video on Windows, File → Export → MP4 on a Mac), a PDF, or a web link to the presentation itself — see how to play a PowerPoint on a TV for the video export in detail.

Word to PowerPoint

A Word document becomes slides in two ways, depending on how it is written. If it uses Word’s heading styles, PowerPoint can read it as an outline: in PowerPoint for Windows choose Home → New Slide → Slides from Outline… and pick the .docx. Every Heading 1 becomes a slide title, every Heading 2 a first-level bullet, Heading 3 a second level; ordinary body text is left out. Apply a design afterwards and the slides are ready to edit.

In Word for the web, File → Export → Export to PowerPoint presentation offers a set of designs and builds a deck from the document’s sections, with pictures and icons suggested by Designer (with a Microsoft 365 subscription, in English). It is a quick draft rather than a finished deck: check what was shortened, and expect long paragraphs to be cut down.

PDF to PowerPoint

A PDF is a print, not a document with structure, so every PDF-to-PowerPoint conversion guesses. Adobe Acrobat’s Export PDF → Microsoft PowerPoint does it best, but text still often arrives as many small boxes. When what you need is the content in a presentation rather than the PDF’s exact look, it is usually faster to let the content be rebuilt into proper slides — that is what our page on turning a document into a presentation is about.

What to check after any conversion

  • Fonts. The most common change. Note the deck’s fonts before converting and install them where the file is opened, or choose fonts both apps have.
  • Slide size. Canva and Google Slides use 16:9 by default; an older deck may be 4:3. Converting between sizes stretches or letterboxes slides.
  • Animations and transitions. Expect them to be simplified or removed. Re-add the few that matter.
  • Charts. A chart may arrive as a picture. If the numbers must stay editable, check it before you delete the original file.
  • Privacy. An online converter receives your whole file. Company decks belong in the apps your company already uses.

Designs for this kind of deck

Every design brings its own colours, fonts and layouts to the whole deck.

How ExpertSlides fits in

ExpertSlides reads and writes PowerPoint itself, so it slots into any of the routes above. On My Projects, Upload PPTX (or a file dropped on the page) opens your own .pptx as a presentation of your account: texts and shapes stay editable, pictures, tables and charts become the editor’s own, and effects, footers and notes are read too. The file is read in your browser; it is not sent to a server to be converted.

To make a new deck from material you have, attach it to the prompt: PDFs, Word documents, CSV and spreadsheets, text files and PowerPoint files are read for their content, and pictures are shown to the AI, which can place them on the slides. Up to ten files go in at once. In the editor, the same works for adding slides — “append these slides” after attaching a file.

Before converting old material, it may be worth seeing what a fresh start looks like: describe the deck, attach the files, pick a look from Design Templates. For fonts that went missing on the way, read fonts in PowerPoint.

Questions, answered

How do I convert pictures into PowerPoint slides?

On Windows use Insert, Photo Album, New Photo Album, add the pictures and choose a layout; PowerPoint makes one slide per picture. On a Mac insert the pictures with Insert, Pictures and move each to its own slide.

Can I turn a picture of a slide into an editable slide?

Not directly. PowerPoint treats it as a picture. Copy the text out with Text actions in the Windows Snipping Tool or Live Text on a Mac, then rebuild the slide.

How do I open a PowerPoint in Canva?

On Canva’s home page choose Create a design, then Import file, and pick the .pptx, or drag it onto the page. Canva converts it into a design; check fonts, animations and diagrams afterwards.

How do I download a Canva presentation as PowerPoint?

Open the design, choose Share, Download, set File type to PPTX and click Download. Some effects arrive as pictures and Canva’s own fonts may be replaced.

Can I still convert PowerPoint to Flash?

No longer usefully: Flash Player reached its end of life at the end of 2020 and browsers do not run it. Export a video or a PDF, or share a link to the presentation instead.

Can ExpertSlides open my PowerPoint file?

Yes. Upload PPTX on My Projects opens a .pptx as an editable presentation of your account, read in your browser. The export writes PowerPoint files again on the plans that include it.
