Converting Word to PowerPoint means two different things. Either you want the document’s text moved onto slides so you do not have to retype it, or you want a presentation about what the document says — shorter, structured for a talk, with charts instead of paragraphs. The built-in routes do the first. The second needs a person, or an AI that reads the document.
| Route | Where | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Export to PowerPoint | Word for the web (Microsoft 365) | A designed deck generated from the document’s sections |
| Outline with headings | PowerPoint for Windows and Mac | One slide per Heading 1, bullets from Heading 2 and below |
| Send to Microsoft PowerPoint | Word for Windows | The same as the outline route, from inside Word |
| Copy and paste | Anywhere | Full control, full effort |
| AI presentation maker | Web | A summarised deck built from the content |
First: prepare the Word document
All built-in routes read the document’s structure, so a few minutes of preparation decide the result. PowerPoint turns each Heading 1 into a slide title, each Heading 2 into a first-level bullet, Heading 3 into a second-level bullet. Normal body text is ignored in the outline route.
Structure the document with headingsWord (Windows and Mac)
Show the structure
Choose View → Navigation Pane (Mac: View → Sidebar → Navigation). It lists the headings; text not listed there is not a heading.
View → Navigation Pane Apply heading styles
Click into each future slide title and choose Home → Styles → Heading 1. Mark the points under it as Heading 2. Keep them short — they become slide text.
Home → Styles → Heading 1 Shorten
Rewrite long headings into slide-length statements. Six or fewer Heading 2 points per Heading 1 keeps slides readable.
Save as .docx
Save and close the document — PowerPoint cannot read a file that is open in Word.
Route 1: Export to PowerPoint in Word for the web
Word for the web (part of Microsoft 365) can transform a document into a presentation with a design applied. Microsoft has rolled this out gradually and for some languages first, so check whether your account has it.
Export a document to PowerPointWord for the web
Open the document online
Open the .docx from OneDrive or SharePoint in Word for the web.
A document open in Word for the web Choose Export to PowerPoint
Choose File → Export → Export to PowerPoint presentation.
File → Export → Export to PowerPoint presentation Pick a design
Select a theme and click Export. Word summarises the sections into slides and adds pictures and icons where it finds a fit.
Open and check
Click Open presentation; it is saved to OneDrive. Check every slide — the summary is automatic.
Route 2: Slides from an outline in PowerPoint
Import a Word outlineWindows
Open PowerPoint
Open a blank presentation or the deck to add slides to, ideally with your theme already applied.
Insert slides from the outline
Choose Home → New Slide → Slides from Outline, pick the .docx and click Insert.
Home → New Slide → Slides from Outline Reset the formatting
Select all new slides in the slide list and choose Home → Reset, so the text takes the theme’s fonts and sizes instead of Word’s.
Home → Reset on the imported slides
On a Mac, the same command is in PowerPoint’s New Slide menu or under Insert, depending on the version; open the .docx there. PowerPoint for the web cannot import an outline.
Route 3: Send to Microsoft PowerPoint (Word for Windows)
Word for Windows has a hidden command that does the outline route from inside Word. Add it once: File → Options → Quick Access Toolbar, choose All Commands under Choose commands from, select Send to Microsoft PowerPoint, click Add and OK. With the document open, click the new button; PowerPoint opens with one slide per Heading 1.
After the conversion: make it a presentation
Whichever route you take, the result is text on slides — a starting point, not a presentation. Work through it in this order:
- Cut. Delete slides the talk does not need; move detail to an appendix.
- Rewrite titles as statements. “Revenue grew in every region” instead of “Revenue”.
- Replace text with visuals. Tables of figures become charts (Insert → Chart), processes become diagrams (Home → Convert to SmartArt).
- Choose layouts. Home → Layout gives each slide the right structure: Two Content, Comparison, Title Only for a big chart.
- Check the design. Home → Designer suggests layouts in Microsoft 365.
Word to Google Slides
Google Slides has no outline import. Convert to PowerPoint with one of the routes above, then upload the .pptx to Google Drive and open it with Google Slides, or use File → Import slides in an existing deck. Alternatively, copy headings from Google Docs into the slides by hand.
Route 4: copy and paste, done well
For a short document, or when only a few parts should go into an existing deck, copying is fastest — if you paste the right way.
- Text: copy from Word, click into a slide’s placeholder, right-click and choose the paste option Keep Text Only. The text takes the slide’s font and size instead of Word’s.
- Lists: paste into the body placeholder; each paragraph becomes a bullet, and Tab / Shift+Tab set the levels.
- Tables: paste and choose Use Destination Styles so the table takes the theme’s colours. Large tables should be cut down before pasting.
- Pictures and charts: copy them from Word and paste onto the slide; Word charts arrive as editable charts with their data.
Which route when
- You have Microsoft 365 and want a quick designed draft: Export to PowerPoint in Word for the web.
- The document is already structured with headings: Slides from Outline.
- You need a few passages in an existing deck: copy and paste with Keep Text Only.
- The document is long and the talk is short: let a person or an AI summarise; the built-in routes do not decide what matters.
One more option in Microsoft 365: with a Copilot licence, Copilot in PowerPoint can create a presentation from a Word file you point it to. Check whether your organisation has enabled it.
When the conversion goes wrong
- All text on one slide: the document has no Heading 1 styles, only bold text. Apply real heading styles and import again.
- Huge or tiny text: the slides kept Word’s formatting. Select them and choose Home → Reset.
- “PowerPoint can’t read the outline”: the document is still open in Word, or it is a format other than .docx, .doc, .rtf or .txt. Close it and save as .docx.
- Pictures missing: the outline route carries text only. Copy pictures separately, or use Export to PowerPoint in Word for the web.
A real presentation from the document with ExpertSlides
ExpertSlides takes the other meaning of “Word to PowerPoint”: a presentation about the document. Attach the .docx (or a PDF) to the prompt, say who the deck is for and how long the talk is, and pick a design. The AI reads the whole document, decides which points become slides and in which order, turns tables of figures into charts, and writes each slide to fit its layout. Names, figures and claims come from your document, not from thin air.
How closely your wording is kept is up to you: Text handling in the prompt’s settings goes from keeping text exactly to a heavy summary. The result downloads as an editable PowerPoint on Pro and Business; every plan exports PDF; on Free the PDF carries the ExpertSlides mark. Read more on our document to presentation page.

Questions, answered
How do I convert a Word document to PowerPoint?
In Word for the web use File, Export, Export to PowerPoint presentation. In PowerPoint for Windows use Home, New Slide, Slides from Outline after formatting the slide titles in Word as Heading 1 and the points as Heading 2.
Why is my Word text missing after importing the outline?
The outline route only reads headings. Normal paragraphs are ignored; apply Heading 1 to slide titles and Heading 2 to bullet points before importing.
Is there a Word to PPT converter that summarises the content?
Word for the web’s Export to PowerPoint summarises sections automatically, and AI presentation makers such as ExpertSlides build a structured deck from what the document says.
How do I make imported slides match my theme?
Select the imported slides and choose Home, Reset. Their text then takes the theme’s fonts, sizes and colours.
Can ExpertSlides turn a Word file into a presentation?
Yes. Attach the .docx to the prompt, describe the audience, choose a design, and the AI builds a deck from the document’s content, with Text handling deciding how closely the wording is kept.
