Canva presentations: what they do well and when PowerPoint is better

Canva made good-looking slides easy for people who never wanted to learn PowerPoint. For many decks it is the right tool — and for some it quietly causes work later. This guide compares the two honestly, shows how to export a Canva presentation to PowerPoint without surprises, and says where an AI presentation maker fits in.

7 min readUpdated

Canva started as a tool for social media graphics and grew into an editor for almost everything: posters, documents, videos, websites — and presentations. Its presentation editor shares the same strengths as the rest of Canva: a huge template library, drag-and-drop editing that feels obvious, stock photos and elements a click away, and collaboration in the browser.

PowerPoint, on the other hand, is the format most organisations exchange decks in. That is the real tension: not which tool makes nicer slides, but where the deck has to go after you made it. This comparison follows Canva’s public product pages and help centre as of this writing; check Canva’s site for current plans and features. We make ExpertSlides, and say clearly where it fits.

What Canva presentations do well

  • Templates for every style. Thousands of presentation templates, many of them playful, editorial or bold in ways PowerPoint’s built-in themes are not. A Canva pitch deck template looks finished from the first minute.
  • Assets in the editor. Photos, illustrations, icons, stickers and charts are searched and dropped in without leaving the page; many are free, more come with a paid plan.
  • One brand across formats. A brand kit in a paid plan keeps logos, colours and fonts for presentations, posts and documents alike.
  • Collaboration. Several people edit at once in the browser, comment, and share a link that always shows the current version.
  • AI helpers. Canva’s AI features (marketed as Magic Design, Magic Write and others) draft slides from a prompt, write text and generate pictures inside the editor.
  • Presenting from the browser. Present mode, a presenter view with notes, and recording yourself over the slides are built in.

Where PowerPoint is the better choice

  • The deck must be edited by others in PowerPoint. Clients, managers and agencies who live in PowerPoint will receive an exported file. Canva fonts that are not installed on their computer are replaced, and some elements arrive as pictures.
  • Your company has a .potx template. Corporate templates with masters, placeholders and locked logos live in PowerPoint. Canva can import a .pptx, but it does not work with masters the way PowerPoint does.
  • Charts from real data. PowerPoint charts are backed by an Excel worksheet you can edit and link. Canva charts are simpler and are entered in its own data table.
  • Offline and in the meeting room. PowerPoint runs without a connection and on every company laptop. Canva needs a browser and a connection unless you downloaded the deck.
  • Long, dense decks. Hundreds of slides with sections, custom shows, hidden backup slides and linked content are PowerPoint’s home ground.

How to export a Canva presentation to PowerPoint

The export works well for most decks if you prepare for it. These steps follow Canva’s download menu; check the result before you send it.

Download a Canva deck as .pptxWeb (Windows and Mac)

  1. Open the download menu

In the open presentation click Share at the top right, then Download.

    Canva: Share → Download
  2. Choose PowerPoint

Under File type choose Microsoft PowerPoint (PPTX), select all pages or only some, and click Download.

    File type: Microsoft PowerPoint
  3. Open it on the target computer

Open the .pptx in PowerPoint where it will be used. Look for replaced fonts first: headings that suddenly look plainer, or text that overflows its box.

  4. Replace missing fonts in one go

In PowerPoint for Windows choose Home → Replace → Replace Fonts and swap the missing font for an installed one. On a Mac use Format → Replace Fonts.

Home → Replace → Replace Fonts
  5. Check what is a picture

Click charts, icons and decorative elements. Anything that shows Picture Format instead of Shape Format or Chart Design was converted to an image and can only be replaced, not edited.

And the other way: a PowerPoint into Canva

Canva imports .pptx files: upload the file from the home page (Upload or drag it in) and it opens as a Canva design. Expect the same conversions in reverse — masters are flattened into the slides, and PowerPoint effects Canva does not have are dropped.

Choosing a Canva presentation template

The size of Canva’s library is its strength and its trap: it is easy to pick a template for its cover and discover on slide six that it has no layout for a chart or a table. Before you commit to one, check it the way you would check a PowerPoint template.

  1. Look past the cover. Scroll through every page of the template. You want at least a title, a section divider, a text slide, a two-column slide, a picture slide, a chart or numbers slide and a closing slide.
  2. Check the fonts. Click a heading and a body text and note the fonts. If the deck will be exported, prefer fonts that exist on the target computers or that you can install.
  3. Count the colours. A good template uses two or three colours plus neutrals. Change them once with Styles in the side panel instead of slide by slide.
  4. Test with your longest text. Paste your longest heading and your densest paragraph into a slide. Templates designed around three-word headlines often break with real content.
  5. Mind the free and paid elements. Some photos and graphics in templates are part of a paid plan; a crown or similar mark shows them. Replace them before you download if you are on the free plan.

A note on Canva pitch decks

Canva’s pitch deck templates look the part, and for a first meeting presented by the founder they are fine. Investors, though, often forward decks and open them in PowerPoint, Google Slides or a PDF viewer. Export to PDF for sending, keep the slide count short, and put real figures in charts rather than decorative graphics. Our pitch deck page covers the slides investors expect.

Which one should you use?

A simple rule works for most people: choose by the last stop of the deck.

  • The deck is presented by you, from a browser or as a PDF: Canva is quick and good-looking.
  • The deck goes to people who edit it in PowerPoint, or must follow a corporate template: build it in PowerPoint, or in a tool that writes native PowerPoint.
  • The deck is part of a campaign with posts, posters and documents in one look: Canva’s brand kit across formats is hard to beat.
  • The deck is built from a report, a paper or a spreadsheet: neither editor reads your document for you; an AI maker that works from documents saves the most time.

Designs for this kind of deck

Every design brings its own colours, fonts and layouts to the whole deck.

Where ExpertSlides fits

ExpertSlides is an AI presentation maker built around slides and PowerPoint. You describe the deck in a sentence, or attach a PDF, a Word file or a spreadsheet, choose a design from the gallery — many of them as bold or playful as a Canva template — and the AI writes the whole deck in it: structure, texts, charts from your figures, pictures for the empty frames. Every element can be moved freely afterwards, and plain-language instructions change what you want.

On the way out, the PowerPoint export (Pro and Business) writes real PowerPoint objects — text boxes, shapes, tables, charts with their data, transitions and animations — in the deck’s fonts. The export menu also has Canva as a target: it hands you that .pptx to import into Canva, should a colleague want to continue there. Every plan exports PDF; on Free the PDF carries the ExpertSlides mark. Brand kits (Pro and Business) put your colours, fonts and logo on every new deck.

Questions, answered

Is Canva good for presentations?

Yes, especially for good-looking decks you present yourself from a browser or as a PDF. It is less suited when the deck must be edited in PowerPoint or follow a corporate template with masters.

Can I export a Canva presentation to PowerPoint?

Yes. Choose Share, Download and the file type Microsoft PowerPoint. Check fonts and charts afterwards: missing fonts are replaced and some elements may arrive as pictures.

Why do my fonts change when I open a Canva deck in PowerPoint?

Fonts from Canva that are not installed on the computer are replaced. Install them, or replace them in PowerPoint with Home, Replace, Replace Fonts.

Is Canva or PowerPoint better for a pitch deck?

Canva for a quick, striking deck you present yourself; PowerPoint when investors or partners will edit the file or the deck must follow your company template.

Can ExpertSlides export to Canva?

On Pro and Business, the export menu’s Canva target hands you a PowerPoint file to import there; the same file opens in PowerPoint and Google Slides.
